Laughter enhances the intake of oxygen, stimulates your heart and lungs, relaxes your muscles and gives your brain a boost of endorphins.
All in all, the best thing that can happen to evolution if you were to give the due respect to innovations in science and technology.
While it is difficult to exactly pin-point as to when the men and women first introduced laughter in their vocabulary, it is estimated it could be about 10–15 million years back. Indeed, it’s a range as broad as it can be.
I guess, laughter might have originated when someone chasing a wild animal for meat would have fallen on his face and created a funny picture for all to relish while the animal made its way to live another day.
One of the writers who understood the power of laughter more than anyone else is none other than William Shakespeare. He had a knack of layering comedy and tragedy to build an emotional sandwich, always making the audience sit on the edge of the seats not knowing what to expect.
According to the survey conducted over 166 countries involving 1.4 million people it was found that our frequency of laughter peaks at 23 and then it takes a downhill till we reach the age of 75. And then shoots up again.
The average adult laughs 17 times a day as compared to a child who laughs around 300 times. But don’t be fooled by statistics because this does not mean that everyone laughs at least 17 times each day. The happier ones might be contributing a lot in increasing the figure of those who don’t laugh at all.
In my lifetime, I have heard a lot of corporate BS about companies saying that they treat their employees as family and take care of their well-being. If that was true then why don’t we have any documented evidence of companies doing workshops on how to laugh more?
So what can we do to improve the frequency of our laughter. Here are my top 12 on the list.
1. Make a conscious effort to laugh every time you see the slightest of opportunities.
2. Start the day with the intention to laugh, no matter what.
3. Smile when you brush your teeth. Let the process begin.
4. Look at a laughing picture of someone in the morning.
5. Smile at the person who serves you the first coffee. Make small talk if you have the time.
6. Form a group that exchanges funny videos in the morning.
7. Spend the first 5 minutes in the office with the person who laughs the most.
8. When you log on, look at your favorite comic strip.
9. Watch snippets of your favorite sitcom whenever you get a few minutes.
10. See funny hosts like Trevor Noah.
11. Pretend to pay attention when your superior is talking. This will definitely make your crack!
12. Eat Healthy. You always laugh more when the gut is clean.
