The Sunday Feed

I just finished watching Succession. I know I a bit late but I don’t repent spending time to watch it at one stretch. The script is good. I think they deserve all the kudos.

I also did watch some interviews of the entire star cast on a few talk shows and this made me thinking.

We always give all the credit to the face on the screen and little to the person who makes all this happen — the director.

I have worked for many years in advertising on several TV commercials and I realised that the Director is as important as the actor.

So whatever credit comes, whether good or bad should be shared equally by the actor as well as the Director.

Here’s a tribute to the all-time top Directors who have brought us the best of action, drama, thrill, suspense and laughter.

I have also highlighted one excellent work that they delivered while acknowledging the fact that each one has an entire list.

1. Alfred Hitchcock: Psycho (1960)

2. Stanley Kubrick: The Shining (1980)

3. Martin Scorsese: Taxi Driver (1976)

4. Steven Spielberg: Schindler’s List (1993)

5. Akira Kurosawa: Seven Samurai (1954)

6. Ingmar Bergman: Persona (1966)

7. Federico Fellini: La Dolce Vita (1960)

8. Orson Welles: Citizen Kane (1941)

9. Francis Ford Coppola: The Godfather (1972)

10. Quentin Tarantino: Pulp Fiction (1994)

11. Billy Wilder: Some Like It Hot (1959)

12. David Lean: The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)

13. Sergei Eisenstein: Alexander Netsky (1938)

14. Woody Allen: Annie Hall (1977)

15. Pedro Almodóvar: All About My Mother (1999)

16. Yasujiro Ozu: Tokyo Story (1953)

17. Jean-Luc Godard: Breathless (1960)

18. Robert Altman: MASH (1970)

19. Charlie Chaplin: Modern Times (1936)

20. Ingmar Bergman: The Seventh Seal (1957)

While we are at it, we should also look at some of the top modern-day Directors:

1. David Fincher — Known for his work on “House of Cards” and “Mindhunter.”

2. Ryan Murphy — Known for his work on “American Horror Story,” “Glee,” and “American Crime Story.”

3. Vince Gilligan — Known for his work on “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.”

4. Ava DuVernay — Known for her work on “Queen Sugar” and “When They See Us.”

5. Nicole Kassell — Known for her work on “Watchmen” and “The Leftovers.”

6. Michelle MacLaren — Known for her work on “Breaking Bad,” “Game of Thrones,” and “The Walking Dead.”

7. Reed Morano — Known for her work on “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Halt and Catch Fire.”

8. Sam Esmail — Known for his work on “Mr. Robot.”

9. Miguel Sapochnik — Known for his work on “Game of Thrones.”

10. Lesli Linka Glatter — Known for her work on “Homeland” and “Mad Men.”

Make sure to watch at least one work done by each of them. There will be a lot you can learn!
