Happy Valentine!

It is a little early but I thought I will publish the article a week before I release my new single, “The Cupid’s got me” on 14th February.” Though Valentine’s Day is seen as a festival of love between two people, the truth is far from why it actually came into being.

The ancient Romans are the people truly responsible for creating the event. It is believed that Emperor Claudius II executed two men, both named Valentine on Feb.14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. The Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day honoured the martyrdom of these two men.

In fact the marketing companies are so focused on increasing revenues that they have extended the hype into a complete week. Apparently, the 7 days before the Valentine’s Day is known as the Valentine’s Week. Every day has its own significance, which offers a different reason to celebrate it with your loved ones. It is the time of the year when love is in the air so to speak.

According to an article published by Hristina Nikolovska, Americans spent $27.4 billion on Valentine’s Day in 2020. US consumers spent $5.8 billion on jewellery on February 14th. The average amount spent on Valentine’s Day was $196.31 per person. She goes on further to say, “There’s no one single item that sells the most as people often purchase multiple gifts for their Valentines. Candy & sweets, greeting cards, and flowers are the top three choices followed by a romantic dinner, wine, gift cards, and ornaments.”

But as we all know, when it comes to “the” relationship, t is not just important to love but often necessary to provide evidences with a little gesture, as little as just saying it with a straight face. But this is an activity that you don’t want to end in roughly about 3 seconds! Neither do you want to extend it like one of Charles Dickens’ long novel. It is an art that is learnt by years of failed attempts to genuine please the lover. And by God, some of the battered marks and bruises are hard to erase!

The way to a woman’s heart is through the stomach. Very rarely do we come across someone who does not like to eat good food or go out to wine and dine. They seem to get a certain high from the mere thought of going out, even if it is just a stroll to the mall for a coffee. But sometimes, they need to be pampered with gifts. Especially, when there is social pressure to share their relationships with their friends or colleagues.

The brands in various industries know this well and this is where they step in to catch up on their revenue deficits in the first quarter. Whether it is a DIY Date Night at Home with great cocktail ideas, recipes, decorating tips, gift ideas or a Valentine’s Day Hair or Make-Up Tips, you will see the ads go on full steam as the day approaches. There will be people ready to advice you on how to look fabulous on your Valentine’s Day Date or even how to write the perfect Valentine’s Day Card all at a price of course. And the companies who will really get on your nerves are all these dating apps. They will make a killing on the poor lonesome or jilted lover wanting to get back into a new relationship. Little do these innocent people know that most of the time they are talking to bots! All in pursuit for happiness!

Well, what people do can never be judged as right or wrong but only be seen as a human behaviour. It’s been almost 2 decades since this festival has really taken off and shows no signs of slowing down. It seems it will get more and more popular as time goes on which of course is a nice thing for the brands, the small companies and the economy in general. However, it is time people stop giving it such a narrow focus and allow people to share the love with those other than just their spouses or partners, especially their family. Don’t forget your family has loved you much before you met the person you fell in love with. Or your friends who always loved you for what you were or are, good or bad.

Happy Valentine Yo! Love you all!
