The Devil is in the Details

The Devil wears Prada but Mr. Bond has a whole lot of things up his sleeve, if you pardon the most obvious accessory that I have reminded you of. Every adjunct that was ever invented has now gone way beyond its mere functional value. Let’s look at some that 007 adorns to make a statement.

1. Car: Well, it the most prominent accessory that actually seems like an extension of the character. Fast, furious, stylish & classic are just some of the qualities that the car connotes when it speeds through the crowded roads of the city. It is a car that is like the smirk of the character, appealing to friends and condescending to enemies. If Harvey Specter says, “bury the enemies with your smile”, this is where he gets his inspiration!

The director very nicely uses a sports car not just to show the opulence of the character but also the fact that the car has to match the speed at which the protagonist thinks and acts. The Aston Martin DB10 was exclusively developed for Spectre (2015), and helped celebrate 50 years of Aston Martin and James Bond, tracing all the way back to the DB5 in Goldfinger.

2. Watch: If you have ever noticed, the one thing you often see other than the face of people is their hand. A good watch is bound to catch your attention. It also goes to show that the person values time and is most likely to look at the wristwatch pretty often.

Fans of Bond films can spot three OMEGA watches worn by the movie heroes. James Bond (Daniel Craig) wears the lightweight Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition, which is packed with innovation and style. New agent Nomi (Lashana Lynch) wears a 38mm Seamaster Aqua Terra with a black dial and black NATO strap, and Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) is equipped with a 27.4mm De Ville Prestige on a hunter green leather strap.

Lindy Hemming, the Oscar-winning costume designer, was responsible for casting 007’s watch in Golden Eye. She said, “I was convinced that Commander Bond, a naval man, a diver and a discreet gentleman of the world would wear the Seamaster with the blue dial.”

3. Sun Glasses: They say in Poker, you don’t play the cards you play the opponent! And since eyes are a window to the soul, many players still prefer to hide their eyes behind the opaque sunglasses. They are the accessories that add more value than the rest because you wear them on your face and cannot be missed even from a distance.

James Bond (Daniel Craig) wears Tom Ford Henry Vintage Wayfarer FT0248 sunglasses in the trailer and promotional images for SPECTRE and in the music video for Sam Smith’s “Writing’s On The Wall”, the movie’s theme song.

4. Travel Bag: One look at the luggage and a smart person will have a fair idea of who is travelling. James has a perfect choice of his bags and baggage depending on where he is going or what mode of transport he is using.

In SPECTRE, James Bond (Daniel Craig) carries a Brunello Cucinelli Cowhide leather Boston travel bag when he arrives in Austria. The bag can briefly be seen when Bond walks through the snow towards the Höffler Klinik.

James Bond (Daniel Craig) has three Globe-Trotter suitcases in the trunk of his Aston Martin DB5 in No Time To Die, when he and Madeleine Swann arrive at their hotel in Matera. Porters of Bond’s hotel in Matera take the pieces out of the trunk.

5. Cufflinks: When you talk to a person, you often look a person’s hand because they are often gesticulating or emphasising the verbal communication. It is not surprising that the shinny cufflink catches your attention, making you wonder how long do you focus on it till it becomes a stare.

James Bond (Daniel Craig) wears a pair of S.T. Dupont 5174 cufflinks in Casino Royale during the first meeting with Vesper (Eva Green) in the high-speed train to Montenegro.

Well, not wearing an accessory does not make you look less attractive or less productive. It is a personal choice and if you think, it might help, you should definitely give it a try. Believe me, nothing works better in building a rapport than a prospect inquiring about a watch you are wearing or a bag you are carrying.
